Channeling a wealth of experience in pediatric care

aFall 2001

The first issue of The Child's Doctor was published 18 years ago with two primary goals: 1) to help our colleagues interpret the practical role of new developments in the broad field of pediatrics and 2) to keep all of us abreast of the new and expanding services at Children's Memorial Hospital that support the care of children. The numbers of authors and the diversity of the topics we have presented reflect that vision of channeling a wealth of experience into your offices and practice. This issue continues that mission—highlighting advances in stem cell transplantation, the state of the art and some controversies in Pediatric Surgery and a guide to the diagnosis of cholesteotoma, which can be treated before causing irreversible deafness.

Dr. Nancy Young has devoted her expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric ear disease. Under her direction, the Department of Otology continues to expand services. She has a special interest in children with congenital and acquired cholesteotoma.

Dr. Marleta Reynolds was designated by the American College of Surgeons to review advances in the specialty of Pediatric Surgery in the year 2000 for their fellowship. Laboratory and clinical research continues to advance the care of infants with pulmonary hypertension and respiratory failure—conditions that Dr. Reynolds has addressed for a number of years as the Director of Extracorporeal Life Support.

Dr. Reggie Duerst has prepared a most clear and succinct summary of the history and current applications of bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. This treatment has received wide publicity in the past year. The political and economic implications of securing these treatments for our patients are important to us as physicians and as citizens. Dr. Duerst was recruited to Children's Memorial Hospital last year to join Dr. Morris Kletzel and Dr. Paul Haut in the Stem Cell Transplantation program.

We think you will find this issue of The Child's Doctor of value. We welcome your commentary on the reader response card in this issue.
