Updates and progress
at Children’s and at NUMS

aSpring 2000

SPRING HAS FINALLY  arrived, and this issue of the Child’s Doctor brings several interesting and informative articles to the readership. These include such diverse topics as "Malignant Hypothermia," "Notion of Contagion," "Control and Management of Pulmonary and Vascular Tone in the Newborn," and "Missing Genes."

At Children’s Memorial Hospital, CEO Pat Magoon and Pediatric Chair Dr. Tom Green have settled into their positions, and the hospital is moving forward nicely. Children’s Memorial is just completing an impressive $135,000,000 fund-raising campaign that promises to provide continued support for various programs and initiatives throughout the medical center. Among the new programs is the Children’s Epilepsy Center, headed by Dr. Douglas Nordli of the Division of Neurology.

In addition, just announced is the appointment of a new Medical School Dean and Vice President for Medical Affairs, former Interim Dean Lew Landsberg, who had filled that role in exemplary fashion in recent months.

The educational programs of the Department of Pediatrics have undergone considerable evolution in recent years and are now under the overall leadership of Dr. Robert Tanz. Third-year medical students at Northwestern University Medical School currently spend about one-half of their pediatric clerkship time in ambulatory settings, i.e. in the private pediatric offices of our Northwestern University Medical School contributed services faculty. We are highly indebted to these pediatricians who devote substantial time and effort to the educational program, providing the students with excellent "real-world" pediatric experiences. Dr. Sandy Sanguino serves capably as the new clerkship director, and our current program has received outstanding reviews from the last several student classes.

Dr. Steven Sheldon coordinates the fourth-year medical student program smoothly and efficiently. Drs. Sharon Unti and James Collins continue to direct the outstanding pediatric residency program, while Dr. David Steinhorn has assumed leadership for fellowship programs and Dr. Cathy Webb has begun to develop the continuing medical education area for the Department of Pediatrics. We urge you all to participate in the ongoing program within Pediatrics.
